Star Wars from Scratch: Overview

User Rating: / 6
PoorBest

A little while ago, one of my sons begged me to teach him to play "Star Wars" on the piano. We had so much fun, that I thought I'd try translating those lessons into a series of short video tutorials. The arrangement is one of the best I've found online - You can get the full sheet music score at MusicNotes.com to make it easier to follow along. This series of short piano lessons is designed for anyone to learn from scratch, even those who may have never played an instrument or read music before! Hope you enjoy the preview!

Star Wars from Scratch #1: Basics of Getting Around the Piano

This series of short piano lessons is based on the techniques I used to teach one of my sons how to play "Star Wars" by John Williams. Don't worry if you've never had piano lessons before, or if you've never read a note of music - I'm going to try to design these lessons to be easy to follow and fun to play! Even though this is a challenging version of the classic Sci Fi movie theme, I'm hoping that by breaking things down, everyone can discover the joys of reading music. Now that we've been introduced to basic directions on a piano, we're ready to learn the first chord in the right hand. We start by learning about the Treble Clef, otherwise known as the G clef, and then from there we can make out the remaining notes. Along the way, we talk about flats and ledger lines.

Star Wars from Scratch #3

Continuing with the main opening theme from the Star Wars movies by John Williams. Now that we have the right hand chord learned, we move on to learning how to read notes in the lower part of the piano and played with the left hand. This lesson looks at how the Bass Clef works and finishes with making the opening chord complete.

Star Wars from Scratch #4

In this lesson, we move from the opening chord to some fast notes. We'll learn about the parts of a note, how to number fingers, the idea of "fingering" (assigning finger numbers to notes), optimal finger position, and a "top secret" method to playing repeated notes really fast.
