Clair de lune from Scratch #62, m. 42, Part 3
Now we put right and left hand parts together, combining our previous work with measure 41. If you've stuck with the lessons this far, then congratulations! You have just worked through the most difficult portion of the piece! There are still some challenges coming up, but this portion is quite a bear and a major accomplishment to get through.

My apologies! It's been a crazy holiday season for me with a lot of concerts and AirTurn activity. I hope to catch up with video lessons soon. Thanks for "prodding" me in the meantime!

Fully understand. Hugh, i've taken about 5 years of piano lessons, so i have a very good grasp of the piano in general. Your video helps speed up the learning MUCH quicker.
What could you recommend to learn the rest of the piece (because im in desperate need to complete the song and cant wait). The hardest thing for me is fingering/tempo. Is there some sort of way to view the notes being played live on a midi representation much like in your videos?
Cant wait until you complete this. I wish you lived near me i'd probably pay at this point to get through the rest of the piece!!

This series is amazing. I'm a beginner, started maybe a few weeks ago. It wouldn't ever have occurred to me to attempt such a difficult piece, but your lessons are making it possible. Twenty-one measures in, I keep waiting for the point where I hit a wall and can go no further, and I haven't hit it yet. (Measure 29 looks like a real pill, though.)
This is great work you're doing here. I'm progressing much faster than I otherwise would have, because I love this piece so much and I can't keep my hands off the keyboard.

I wasn't sure if you'd ever visit my site again (I did reply to your comment), so I wanted to ensure that I thanked you for all your hard work with these video lessons. I have learned a lot in the short time since I've had my piano and your lessons have been a great help. I hope to see more lessons soon!

I just came across your teaching series on PianoWorld! Well done! Your teaching style fondly reminds me of a professor I had about 18 years ago.
I haven't had a piano in about 6 years, but I'll finally have one in about a week. I plan to go through all your videos.
Thanks again!

Hi Hugh,
I've struggled a while with this beautiful masterpiece... and then I found your lessons. In just one and a half day I made it from measure 1-42. Of course I need some more practice and apply the tai chi to feel the 'waves'.
Thank you so much for the effort you made for the videos. I like your teaching style and it is very helpful for me. Please keep goin'
I'm really looking forward for your new lessons.
Thanks

Many thanks for all the help with this true classic, Hugh. I used to play this composition when I was about 16 - though not very well as I had no respect for proper fingering, etc. Now I'm 64 years old and after well over 40 years of not playing piano at all I'm trying to re-learn (correctly this time) a lot of the stuff I taught myself way back then. How about teaching us Rachmaninoff Prelude in C# Minor? Hope you can get back to finishing Clair de Lune soon.

Hugh, I was struggling to learn this on my own after my former teacher told me to gather 8 years of piano-playing experience before even attempting it (I've had 2 years of lessons). Then I found your video lessons. They are exactly what I needed.
I am practicing through measure 29 now, and you've given me the confidence to continue. My goal is to play this for my mother's 80th birthday; it's her favorite piece.
I hope you find the time to complete the series; it is extremely well done: much better than any video lessons I've paid big bucks for.
Then, someday I hope you will guide us through Chopin's "heroic" polonaise! (An even bigger challenge.)
Thank you, my teacher.

Dear Hugh,
So far the lessons thus far have been awesome, i could continue learning the piece, but having your videos as a guidance makes it go by so much faster, I really do hope you complete the song, thanks for everything!

Hugh,
I've gotten through your set of lessons and have embarked on a few measures of my own. However, the going has been quite tricky...
Here's another prod to keep you going!!

Your lessons look great! But I would be less apprehensive if I saw any activity, new lessons added, in the last 6 months. This also prevented me from buying your DVD set as it is incomplete.
Hope all is OK.
Best wishes, a fan,

I certainly understand your apprehension, Dave! I'm waiting for repairs to my piano, as well as an opening in my performing and teaching schedule to resume lessons and finish the Clair de lune from Scratch series. Thanks for your patience in the meantime!

I have never played piano in my life. We bought a piano for my 6 year as he is starting to take lessons. I went to google to look up any piano sheet I can print out just so I can begin learning the notes. The first hit I came across was Clair de Lune. Of course, during that time I didn't know anything about Clair de Lune, who it was by, what it sounded like. After listening to your introduction on YouTube, I was hooked. I really love the piece and went on to lesson 2. The rest is history.
I have worked my way up to lesson 44 in about a month's time. I have to say, your "experiment" is working out really really well. I hope you come up with more pieces. This is very easy way to learn. Some might think I have no business playing something this difficult, but hey, this is for shear fun and relaxation. Hope to see the end of this. report abuse

its one year since you posted this lesson video.... and it leaves me restless, sir hugh!
please do mention when you'll be able to continue with these great lessons... even though it be another year... But please mention the date.... the suspense is killing me!
it's more like those soaps.. but x365 times longer...
i tried learning it myself, but the notes are such that figuring fingering is very difficult. I like the way you teach this. short and to the point.
(^^^) >>you could even directly use the music reader to write fingerings, highlights etc as we get the idea of snipping out measures. and it would also save you time; instead of copying a snippet of the measure each time, resizing it etc
thanks for reading this 'quite a long post' and please do mention when you'll be able to continue...
with best wishes
gary

I really hope you can find the time to complete these lessons. I'm only 13 years old and am on lesson 35. soon though, ill have completed the rest of the currently available lessons and they are so amazing I think it would be a waste of time to not finish it.

I'm only thirteen years old, and the content of these videos has been simple enough for me, which really does tell you how good and easy it is to play this piece with help from a master. It would be really cool to show off to my friends this piece complete. I'm only at lesson 35 but I hope to have finished the current videos available very soon, so I would really appreciate it if you would be able to finnish the series. Thank You
Best wishes

These lessons have doubled my love for the piano.
I am half way through but thought I'd have a look at the end and now see Hugh is too busy.
Hugh is doing a wonderful job and I join the others in hoping he will finish the piece (before I get to measure 42!)

Hugh,
I ask that you please continue your Clair de Lune lessons. Its such an amazing piece, and I can't believe I've actually been able to work through it with your help. Your lessons are so intuitive, and quite frankly, if i wasn't for you, I wouldn't likely ever have a chance at playing this masterpiece. Please continue the lessons. Please!

Hi Hugh,
You lessons are marvelous, but if you're too busy to make any more could you please maybe just post up what remains of the sheet music with a little number by each note to signify the fingers we should use. Thanks to your help so far that should be sufficient for many of us to finish the piece. You've taken us so far, just a bit more would really mean a lot.
Thank you so much!

Hugh, I am no longer a beginner (60 year old playing for about 15 years just on my own-had lessons as a 10 year old) thanks to your instruction. I may never be able to make the ocean of sound like you but amaze myself at my progress through practice. I was under the impression you could join and pay for the rest of the lessons. Is that true? Good luck to you. I am glad you are having success and have been so busy.

Hugh, these lessons have been extremely helpful. I've been working on this piece for awhile now and I know that if I don't finish it, it will eat away at me. I would very much like to continue these lessons because you make it very easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time to do them.

Hugh,
just wanted to let you know you have inspired me to play the piano. Ive alway been a fan of Debussy but never played piano before and now i have the means of learning how. I was surprised by how much fun overcoming a difficult measure is and i wanted to let you know you are doing a wonderful job. Hope all is well

wow, what fantastic lessons, what discipline and patience and love of music, this is definitely the way to teach sight reading and technique and rhythm and fingering, not by boring exercises but by learning to play such a marvelous piece of music.
Even if you do not finish the entire piece with your lessons you have guided and inspired us to study and learn the remaining measures. But of course it would be wonderful for your students --- and for you I think -- if you could pick up the lesssons after No. 62 and work your way through the end!
Thank you again for the great lessons
